Catching up: We hear that Germany’s dressage team coach Holger Schmezer, will resign after this year’s London Olympics. Holger has coached the team since 2000. The news came through St. Georg magazine (www.st-georg.de), which also reports that the coaching job will then be taken over by his co-trainer Jonny Hilberath.
Dr. Cesar Para has sold Grandioso, his gold medal winning Pan Am partner, as well as the promising FEI mare, Federleicht, to the Glock Performance Horse Centre in Austria. We understand that Gaston Glock’s in house rider, Marcel Schoenmakers will be competing them. And on the subject of new rides…Guenter Seidel has a new Grand Prix horse with the help of Ed.
Camille Penhoet will be aiming for a spot on the US Team at this summer’s Olympic Games in London. We hear that Guenter will be campaigning Marie Meyers’ Fandango through August of 2012.
What a party! Fire dancers and mermaids in the pool at the World Dressage Masters exhibitors party at IPC. It was so veryWellington – over the top. Lots of people there but everyone seemed to be behaving themselves. I’ll be at WDM today and will tell you if anything comes up. But let’s face it, dressage people are boring!!
Correction: Iron Spring Farm submitted a photo of Rabiola and Robby at Dressage At Devon and we mistakenly credited the wrong photographer. Stacy Lynne Wendkos took the picture. We regret the error.
Canadians have been coming on strong this season – the US better watch out. Toronto native and three time Canadian Olympian Ashley Holzer won both the Grand Prix for Freestyle and the Grand Prix Freestyle at the CDI-W Gold Coast Opener in January. British Columbia native Shannon Dueck was hot on her heels with a fourth place finish in the Freestyle and Olympian Evi Strasser of Sainte Adele, Quebec was fifth in both the Grand Prix for Freestyle and the Grand Prix Freestyle. Jacqueline Brooks from Ontario rode her 2008 Olympic partner Gran Gesto, the 17 year old Oldenburg gelding owned by Brinc, Ltd. and Anne Welch, to seventh place in the Freestyle scoring 65.125%.
A Plea for Help: “My name is Erica Brant, and I’m an 18 year old Grade II Para-Equestrian. You may have heard about me throughout the last few months, as my horse Polly and I have had the privilege of being featured in several magazines, including Sidelines and Wellington the Magazine. Polly has been in training for dressage for about seven months now. It’s become clear to me that she’s unhappy in her work and not suitable for the job I’m asking her to do. After much thinking, I’ve decided it’s in both of our best interests that I find a new home for her. I’m now looking for a new horse to pursue my dreams with. Polly was adopted from a rescue center and because of the center’s policy, my adoption fee is non-refundable. I am now unable to pay a purchase price for a new horse. However, I can guarantee a wonderful, loving home in Wellington, Florida. The best option for me would be to find an older horse capable of competing at First Level that someone may be willing to adopt to me or free-lease. Since I’m a Grade II rider, I will be riding tests at the walk, trot and optional canter for my freestyles. Some lateral work is included in the more complex tests. The horse will be stabled with Grand Prix rider and trainer Bethany Peslar at Everglades Dressage (www.evergladesdressage.com) and be in a regular lesson program. Ideally, I am looking for a horse at or under 16hh, safe and one that doesn’t require too much leg to move forward, as I have Cerebral Palsy which makes using my lower leg difficult. While the horse needs to be safe and dependable, I have six years of riding experience and am not a beginner. I would like to find a suitable horse as soon as possible and any help provided would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and I can be reached at email@example.com”

Catching up: Josh Hall, DVM is back on the scene in Wellington looking after Tommy Lee Jones and the Ganzi’s polo strings. When Josh is not inFlorida, you can find him practicing his trade in Santa Barbara.
Yikes! By now, you’ve probably heard that there is a horse virus out in Californiathat has brought all equestrian activity to a screeching halt. We learned that one of Domingo Questal’s horses died from the virus. Apparently the virus was brought in by horses at the rodeo grounds atEl Dorado. It is airborne and most games and activities have been cancelled.
Polo will officially become a discipline of the U.S. Pony Club during the 2012 USPC Annual Meeting and Convention next week in New Orleans! In celebration of this special partnership, the USPA plans to offer a free introductory membership to Pony Club members and is currently working with its member clubs and other polo entities to offer educational clinics this year for Pony Club chapters located around the country. Preliminary Discussions have begun for a spring re-match of the England vs. USA Townsend Cup, with the English acting as host.
Bumps ands bruises: Polo Editor Danika Rice is recovering from surgery after a spill with a polo pony in Houston. The horse tripped and fell with her foot still in the stirrup, breaking both the tibia and fibula bones feeding into her ankle. Two plates and 7 screws later, the healing process has begun! This all came a week after brother Shane took a tumble during the opening rounds of the 8-goal at Sarasota Polo Club. Shane fared better, sporting only a bum knee and some impressive bruises.
Chad Bowman also took a tumble during chukkers in Houston’s winter season arena polo……..he suffered only a fat lip, so best get to paying up on his case of beer to ease the swelling!
Stay up-to-date with the latest happenings of the winter high-goal season…even when you can’t be there! IPCscoreboard.com is a new website from the International Polo Club that will feature real-time updates, scores, stats and photos from Florida!
Mark your calendars: American Polo Horse Association’s National Polo Pony Show returns to West Palm Beach, Florida; Tuesday March 27, once again at the Jim Brandon Equestrian center.
Fun fact: APHA 2011 “most searched” horse of the year was Mariah, owned by California’s Domingo Questal.
New baby department: Del Walton and longtime girlfriend Tessa Lord have welcomed their second child, another son, Robert Callaghan Walton, into the world!
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Avendano Memorial Junior Polo tournament. If you have long memories (or photos, perhaps) contact Haley Bryan, who’s working on putting together the history of this memorable tournament. The editor remembers when Julio Arellano and the Novillo-Astrada boys played in it – and it was an amazing game that year. Most of the kids who played in that match are now high goalers!
The Equestrian Celebrity Bartending Challenge to benefit the YMCA of the Palm Beaches took place in mid-January 21st at The Gallery Lounge, International Arena, Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Polo players Kris Kampsen, Nic Roldan (voted one of Vanity Fair’s Hottest Horseman), Brandon Phillips (also a model) and Pelon Escapite were among the bartenders. Show jumpers Georgina Bloomberg, Marley Goodman, Paige Johnson, Daisy Johnson, Tiffany Foster, Whitney Weeks and dressage rider Devon Kane also doled out the drinks in this popular fundraiser.
Passing: the Aiken polo family lost a fine young man in Austin Allen.Austin was a sweet good natured athlete who played polo on the Aiken Interscholastic team as well as other tournaments. His polite demeanor, ready smile and sweet soul will be missed by all of us.

Catching up: Holly Hugo-Vidal says she’s excited to be back in California, having returned from North Carolina and opened up shop at Showpark, in Del Mar, where she plans to have a small group of riders. Holly also will continue to judge and give clinics. She has brought her two Frenchies, who have acquired a love for the beach. Holly lives in Rancho Santa Fe around the bend from Arthur Hawkins.
Bernie Traurig, along with Scott Hofstetter, Nona Garson and Linda Andrisani, judged the hunt seat divisions of the College Preparatory Invitational. Robert Dover judged the dressage competition, a new addition to the event in its second year. Read about Bernie’s newest venture in the next issue of Sidelines.
Cornelia Guest is a girl of many talents. She now has a line of jewelry and handbags that will be carried by some high end horse show vendors. “Nell” has teamed up with her old partner Mason Phelps to promote her new products and we expect to see her around the horse shows by the end of season. Welcome back Nell.
And speaking of Mason, Karen Robinson has written his biography. Now this is sure to be a best seller!
While we’re plugging books, we must mention that Olympic Silver Medalist, Peter Leone, has a new book due out in April that’s sure to be a winner. Peter Leone’s Show Jumping Clinic: Success Strategies for Equestrian Athletes, written by Leone and Kimberly S. Jaussi, PhD, explores every aspect of riding from the basics of correct use of aids through the psychology of approaching a World Cup course.
We hear the medics were called in when a trainer and his groom got into a fist fight recently at one of the big winter circuits. Ouch – now that is a bit much, don’t you think.
Do you believe that James H. Fairclough, II joined HISTORY’s Full Metal Jousting for its inaugural season? The 10 part series features full contact jousts with competitors going head-to-head on horseback in brutal tests of strength, endurance and courage. High speed cameras capture every punishing blow as jousters charge and collide at 30 miles per hour, with their combat not being choreographed at all. The last man standing takes home a $100,000 cash prize. Um…that last man standing part sounds a bit ominous to us…
The Other Side of the Pond: Eurospy tells us that Bruce Hewett, the Equine Osteopath who regularly flies into the USA to treat clients, is now finding that he is as much in demand in the dressage world and in particular with Lusitanos. Firstly, he was invited down to Windsor to treat horses owned by Pinky Heintz for whom Peter Storr, one of the leading UK riders used to compete. We hear his newest client is Neno Baptiste, one of the leading dressage trainers and riders in Portugal.
Ben Maher who recently separated from his wife (after a rather brief union) enjoyed a wonderfulOlympia with spectacular results, is currently inWellington with a team of horses.
Skye Higgin, a local girl who was formerly based with Dave Quigley (Ire), and whose Mother Emma Higgin regularly writes an entertaining blog on www.thehorseexchange.com is thoroughly enjoying her time in Wellington and has discovered the joys of ‘Players Club’ and is causing quite a stir with her English accent and quintessential English rose looks, amongst the men folk.
Tim Stockdale is on the mend having spent five weeks flat on his back in the local Orthopaedic hospital, Gobowen with a broken neck. He is recovering well and has allegedly decided to take action against the owners of the horse he fell from. It is reported he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. (Maybe this would explain why no sense has been knocked into him, to be quite frank). Had it not been for the immediate response and medical knowledge of the staff on site at the time, he would almost certainly have been paralysed. Tim did express his extreme gratitude before taking steps to sue.
Bumps and bruises: McLain Ward had a bad fall recently in an early grand prix at the Winter Equestrian Festival. He is out for ten to twelve weeks with multiple fractures of the patella. He’ll have to miss the Olympic trials, but with any luck the selectors will give him a “by” and keep him on the Olympic short list.
Horse Show News: The 2012 Gene Mische American Invitational, presented by G & C Farm returns toTampa’s Raymond James Stadium on Saturday, April 7, at 7:30 pm.
