The much awaited Mid Atlantic location for ReRun Horse Adoption and Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue is now up and running and already placing horses in loving pre-approved adoptive homes. Both registered charities operate out of the same location and each has their own application process. The selection of Thoroughbreds available for adoption ranges from unraced young show prospects to older horses suitable for a wide range of pursuits and activities.
Currently undergoing retraining and looking for a new forever home is Tudor King. I’m always excited to discuss Tudor because this is the horse that dispels the negative connotations about off track Thoroughbreds. Tudor is beautiful inside and out – he has a gorgeous head with distinctive white and is fairly correct with good straight legs, nice shoulder and is short coupled through the back. He has no vices and is good to handle in all respects from clipping to catching to shoeing and is a firm favorite around the barn. Only 6 years old, he has made the transition from racetrack to retirement extremely well and is already on all night turnout and is expected to continue progressing quickly. He has current knee x rays that are clean and flexed fine upon vet evaluation and would be suitable for jumping.
So what’s he been up to since retiring from the track? Well he’s become reacquainted with a slower pace of life, being around other horses and has had a formal introduction to both dogs and children. He spent his first few weeks back under saddle hitting the trails both alone and in the company of other horses with a Labrador bringing up the rear and he has surpassed any expectations we may have had for him – totally rock solid even when solo and confronted with new and reputedly horse eating objects. He has been worked in both a dressage arena with markers and mirrors and also a hunter ring with a variety of jumps and in both cases he adapted and settled quickly to new environments.
Tudor is adored by everyone that crosses his path and is kind and genuine with a big heart and an old soul. Even in times of uncertainty he has never once shown ill will towards anyone and seeks your reassurance. Saving one horse won’t change the world but it will surely change the world for that one horse – please consider opening your home and your heart to a ReRun or Akindale horse.
